和 [Wòh] Harmony
[Wòh] 和 Harmony is a collaborative art project that represents the unique fused-culture identity of people who live and work within, or between, Chinese and American cultures.
This project started with an open call, by inviting every Chinese/ American-born-Chinese person to participate as a collaborative artist by donating their used Asian seasoning package from their kitchen. These objects, once used in a personal setting, become representative of their unique bodies and identity.
The Asian/Chinese seasonings sold from the local Asian Grocery stores are designed especially for export to the US market and carry a different aesthetic from products sold in China. The product design seen in this unique collection holds a similarity to the food industries supporting the food imports and exports trade; they become visual and somatic bridges between China and the US.
[Wòh] becomes a gathering point and a record that represents my unique immigrant identity. As the audience experiences my work, I am simultaneously highlighting an existing, but under-represented, Chinese American culture.
